Maintenance of Emerald Grass

Emerald grass is one of the best seller grass type in all of Brazil. People from the South to the North of the country, and especially at the Southeast and Central West areas  have used Emerald grass in the landscaping of their homes, closed neighbourhoods, comercial areas, sports fields, and parks. This grass characterizes by having thin leaves and a vivid green that draws attention of those who see it. However, to keep this striking aspect, this grass requires some special care. Even though the Emerald grass is relatively resistant and requires less maintenance compared to other types of grass such as Bahia grass, Bermuda / Bermuda grass or Saint Augustine grass, we present below some essential tips that will make your lawn formed by Emerald grass always flawless.

The care of the Emerald Grass starts since its planting

If you have planted the Emerald grass for more than 3 months, you should...

Trim the Emerald Grass

Trimming the Emerald grass is very important for its maintenance. If the height of your Emerald grass is higher than 5 cm, you can trim your Emerald grass in 2/3 of its height, that is, at a height of 3.7 cm. Do not cut too close to the ground. If your grass is growing well, allow at least 7 to 10 days to trim again. After trimming the emerald grass, be sure to pick up the cut grass using a rake. The grass can dry out, rot, and fungi diseases like Rhizoctonia can ruin your Emerald grass.

Watering the Emerald Grass

If you have an automatic sprinkler for your lawn formed by Emerald grass, use it only during the dry season, especially in Winter time.
In the rainy season, when it rains more than 2.5 cm per week, additional irrigation of the Emerald grass is unnecessary as it is relatively resistant to drought. If it has rained a little, try to irrigate less.

An important tip: avoid the formation of puddles of water on the Emerald grass. Do not soak it. Avoid wasting water.
For the Emerald grass, the motto “it never hurts” does not apply! Emerald grass does not tolerate excess of water.

Fertilizing the Emerald Grass

You can fertilize your Emerald grass or cover it with dirt in the Winter time, from June to August (in the Southern Hemisphere). The land cover does not have to be in excess, but enough to see part of the leaves of the emerald grass as in the figure below. 

If your grass has a dry appearance, and it is not good enough, we recommend mixing the soil with fertilizer, which can be both organic and synthetic fertilizer. For more tips on fertilizing, see our article on How to Fertilize Grass which is also used for Emerald grass.

Type 16-4-8 fertilizers in Brazil can be purchased from a local farm store and it can be used on your grass. We recommend the application of 3 kg of fertilizer for every 100 m2. Please note that we recommend you to ask for a local agronomist for a correct type and use of the fertilizer to your land. 

An additional tip: applying iron supplements and nitrogen fertilizers improves the color of your Emerald grass! A complementation of 1 to 2 Kg of nitrogen specific for Emerald grass per 100 m2 annually, during the period of growth of the grass will bring you great results. You can use 32% nitrogen + amino acid complex. Remember not to over-fertilize your emerald grass!

Emerald Grass Pest and Weed Control

Although the Emerald grass has a high density, which may help on reducing the weed population, this type of grass is not completely immune to these pests. So, if you see some weeds growing on the grass, try to remove them manually as soon as possible before it proliferates over your Emerald grass and makes maintenance more costly and laborious.

The use of herbicides can only be used as a last resort. They have toxic products that require controlled and very careful handling and, therefore, if you intend to purchase it, you need a prescription and the guidance of an agronomist who will indicate the correct herbicide for the type of weed in your Emerald grass. If you have pets growing on your emerald grass, try to avoid using these products as much as possible. Or, avoid the animals walking on the Emerald grass treated with the product for a period.
